Explore Ottawa this Winter
Escape the bustle of the city and spend time outdoors this Winter. Here are some of the exciting activities you can enjoy in the Ottawa area:
- Snowmobiling
The Ottawa Valley is prone to getting lots of snow and reaching quite chilly temperatures, perfect for snowmobiling. There are over 2,500 km of groomed Trans Ontario Provincial trails that take you through scenic villages, old mine sites, and even ghost towns. Calabogie Peaks Resort is a popular destination for snowmobilers from across Ontario.
- Skiing and Snowboarding
The Ottawa Valley has some of the highest vertical drops in Eastern Ontario, but also has several gentle runs, making it a great skiing and snowboarding destination. The Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail is popular with cross country skiers, winding along the Ottawa River for 16 km. There is also 150 km of trails in the Greenbelt around Ottawa for cross country skiers of all levels.
- Snowshoeing
Explore the Ottawa Valley wilderness by strapping on some snowshoes (check out this article for where to rent snowshoes in Ottawa) and going on a guided tour or blazing your own trail. If you take a quick trip across the border into Gatineau, you’ll find dedicated snowshoeing trails in Gatineau Park.
- Skating
The Rideau Canal Skateway is the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world and brings many tourists to Ottawa each year. The Skateway is free and is open (weather permitting) from late December to late February. If the weather conditions aren’t quite right, Ottawa has several refrigerated outdoor rinks, including the Rink of Dreams at City Hall and the Skating Court at Lansdowne.
